Team Vested is on the ground this week at Money20/20 in Las Vegas. The primary takeaway from day one is clear: innovation is outpacing regulation, making credibility and trust the ultimate catalyst for scale. From artificial intelligence and stablecoins to digital assets, CX, and scam prevention, the conversation has moved past simple technical capability. Today, industry leaders are focused on security, clear accountability, and building lasting customer confidence.

AI agents are already transacting. One large bank said agent-initiated transactions grew 500 to 600 percent in about a month. A traditional card payment involves four parties: the cardholder, the merchant, and each of their banks. An AI agent acting on the cardholder’s behalf adds a fifth, and nobody has worked out who’s liable when it gets something wrong. One bank CEO said he won’t let outside agents into customer accounts yet, then acknowledged that customers will use them whether banks allow it or not.

The bigger race is for the customer relationship. Security gets the headlines, but the longer-term risk is relevance. If consumers turn to AI agents for advice and transactions, banks could become the plumbing behind someone else’s customer relationship, much as telecom carriers kept carrying the traffic while handset makers and messaging apps took the customer. Banks still hold real advantages like deeper data, human advisors, the ability to act and trust built over lifetimes. Those only count if digital, human and AI channels work in unison.

Stablecoins have the attention, not yet the volume. They’re roughly 1 percent of consumer cross-border payments and a fraction of that in B2B. Deposit protection tops executive concerns. While mainstream adoption among traditional banking executives remains limited, these instruments dominate leadership discussions, driven primarily by anxiety over safeguarding core consumer deposits.

Digital gold highlights the same demand for reliability. A compelling discussion focused on providing a secure, physically backed foundation, defined by transparent sourcing and safe storage, for future product development. Surveys indicate that 90 percent of allocation decisions would favor tokenized precious metals if friction were removed, with 66 percent citing credibility as their primary hurdle. The overarching theme remains the same as in transaction processing.

In customer experience, automate the task, not the relationship. About 70 percent of consumers still want a human for money matters. The firms getting results use AI to take note-taking and call scoring off reps’ plates so they can focus on the customer. One lender reported an NPS of 92. Another cut call volume by 30 percent by fixing the friction its call transcripts revealed.

Fraud keeps getting more expensive. Every dollar lost now costs $5.47 to recover, up from $4 in 2021, and scams account for a third of losses.

What it means for financial brands. Speed and capability have become essential requirements in today’s financial landscape. The companies that succeed will be those that can clearly articulate why their product is trustworthy and prioritize maintaining the customer relationship, rather than allowing that relationship to be controlled by whoever owns the interface. This challenge is as much about effective communication as it is about technology.
