Confidence, Connection and Career Growth: An Evening with the Alumni Advisory Board

I had the privilege of being part of the Taylor Bennett Foundation Alumni Advisory Board (AAB)’s first-ever event at Vested’s UK headquarters. It was an inspiring evening that brought together alumni, mentors, and friends of the Foundation for meaningful conversation, connection, and community.

I was honoured to share the stage with two remarkable alumni, and the discussion was expertly hosted by Shanil Nayee (Axicom).

  • Haider Chaudhry – Fight or Flight
  • Hannah Mensah-Kane – Consultant, Trainer & Mentor

Together, we explored early steps into leadership, building influence, and how to future-proof your career in PR and communications. But beyond practical tips, the event highlighted something far more important: the value of connection and shared experience.

Key Reflections from the Evening

1. Leadership starts with intention

Leadership isn’t about a title or promotion. It begins with the small, everyday choices we make — speaking up when it matters, stepping into opportunities, and supporting others along the way. The early steps into leadership are often the most formative, shaping not only careers but character.

2. Connection builds confidence

One of the key messages I shared was the importance of building connections, knowing your strengths, and advocating for yourself. Confidence isn’t about being the loudest in the room; it’s about clarity on what you bring and having the courage to stand by it. True influence comes from relationships and trust, not visibility alone.

3. Adaptability is everything

In a fast-changing industry like PR and communications, the only constant is change. Future-proofing your career requires curiosity, flexibility, and a willingness to learn continuously. It also means being generous with your knowledge — helping others grow helps you grow too.

Seeing alumni (myself included) share their insights with the next generation was incredibly inspiring. The Taylor Bennett Foundation has long championed diversity and access in communications, but events like this show the full circle of its impact, alumni stepping into more senior positions, advocating for their own career growth and transitioning into leadership whilst creating opportunities for others.

It’s a reminder that growth isn’t a solo journey. Confidence is amplified when shared. Leadership is most meaningful when it lifts others.

This is just the beginning for the Alumni Advisory Board. We have many more events, mentorship initiatives, and opportunities to strengthen our network in 2026 and beyond. I’m excited to see this community continue to develop, support each other, and lead with purpose.
